Class Description
This course is designed to provide participants the knowledge and skills necessary to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. Participants will be certified in American Safety and Health Institute’s (ASHI) courses: CPR Pro for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid for the Community, and Emergency Oxygen Administration.
The course presents information on the skills and knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf, and waterpark environments. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary.
The course covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, open water dangers, legal responsibilities, pool maintenance basics, and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard. Students must pass the physical skills test prior to the class and must be 16 years of age by the last day of the scheduled class.
Prerequisites
REQUIRED Swim testing will be provided on February 28th from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm at the North Pinellas Branch Pool.

Pre-Assignments
Complete the ASHI lessons prior to the class. The lesson content is approximately five hours in length. The class trainer will send you an e-mail with more information and a link to the lessons. Complete the Lifeguard eLearning courses from LCDC per your Instructor's direction.
Items to Bring
- Swimsuit, towel, extra change of clothes, sunscreen, lunch/snacks, pen/pencil
- Proof of age, a student under the age of 18 must also bring a minor participants permission form.
Your Supervisor’s approval is required to register in ACTIVE, and each branch is responsible for enrolling their staff in YMCA of the Suncoast Trainings. To find the YMCA of the Suncoast classes in ACTIVE, search by:

- Then search by the Class Date
